What if I told you there are 5 things you can do before getting out of bed that will change your day? Would you do them? Would you at least try doing them for a week or so?
When I was younger I used to just pop out of bed and go about my day. It never occurred to me that there could be a proper or good way to start my day and that I wouldn’t even have to leave my bed to do it.
Now that I am older, I try to do things at a little slower pace. I try to enjoy and be mindful of each moment of each day. Yeah, I still haven’t mastered it completely but at least I’m working towards it.
When you wake up in the morning, take a few extra minutes to incorporate these 5 things that you can do before you even get out of bed. I think you will see that your days will be happier, more productive and you will just feel better.
GET AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE
What does “get an attitude of gratitude”? It means to take some time and think of all of the things you are grateful for. It could simply be the fact that you woke up, or that you got a good nights sleep. That you are healthy, that you have a loving family.
When you start looking at all of the things that you are grateful for you will be operating from a place of gratitude. This is so different from how many live their lives, just walking around wishing they had this or that. That is operating from an attitude of “lack” and is no way to go through life.
SMILE
Yes, that’s right… SMILE!
This works great and can be incorporated while you are going through all of those things you are grateful for (I’m sure many of those things will make you smile).
If for some reason those things just didn’t bring a smile to your face, I want you to make yourself smile now. This is about nothing more than getting the muscles to move to that smiling position. Your body responds to things such as this.
Have you ever heard of the saying “fake it till you make it”? Your mind will recognize that there is a smile on your face and say “Hey, we must be happy, we are smiling”. Just try it. The more you do it the more it will work.
DRINK A GLASS OF WATER
There are a couple of important reasons for drinking a glass of water. The first is that after sleeping for 8 hours (Or how many you were able to fit in.) your body has been fasting. Your entire body and system slow down when you sleep. Having a glass of water as soon as you wake, before getting out of bed, will help to wake up your body and get your digestive system going.
The second reason to drink a glass of water before getting out of bed is, most of us never get enough water. We go through the day basically dehydrated. This will at least ensure you get some water into your body.
SET YOUR INTENTIONS FOR THE DAY
Take a few moments to run through how you want your day to go. Do you want to be calm for that big meeting at work? Set that as your intention. Decide how you want to feel while going through the things that need to be done for the day.
STRETCH
As we get older our flexibility is reduced. It is actually one of the main reasons we end up with so many aches and pains not to mention getting hurt if we happen to fall.
Before you get out of bed, lie on your back and pull your knees to your chest. This will stretch your back. Now stretch out each leg straight and pull it towards you. This will stretch your hamstring muscles.
These are just a few stretches you can do, there are so many more you can add. Introduce a few yoga poses (yes many can be done before getting out of bed).
* Yoga is one of the best things for your body as we grow older. It helps with flexibility, balance, and our minds. You don’t even have to leave your home to do it.

You are very welcome David.
Better to be a 1/5th of the way there than none.
Make it a great day!

Nothing better than a morning workout, like a 2k run, it doesn’t take that long and boosts your energy level for the rest of the day.

When you get up, give yourself a couple of minutes to readjust to reality, revisit within the body. Instead of bounding call at a mad rush, slowly awaken and stretch, mentally map your day, meditate or maybe plan what you’re getting to wear.

Those are wonderful suggestions.
Thank you for sharing them with us all.

I loved ALL of these suggestions! I have one tiny comment. It’s about the
proper grammar “laying in bed”. Laying is for an inanimate object such as “lay the book on the table”. Lying is for a person, as in “lying down to sleep”. Most people make this common error, and I’m probably making a mountain out of a molehill, but if it helps someone with this, that’s ok.

Thank you MaryAnn.

I am so happy with this site! In our culture (Europe) 50 is the new 30 (year) and hardly anyone cares that this is okay, it’s just not very possible. It is good to read about how this age also has its own beauty and dignity, and certainly its own peculiarity.
